It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota... First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car - for example here - autoinsurance.maclenet.com
References :
Hello

Google "Group 1 Cars" Or "Cars by Groups"

You will come up with lists like below

http://www.carpages.co.uk/car-insurance/car-insurance-group-1-1.asp

When you get onto some sites you may have to enter the group required.
You can normally also change to group you are looking at.
The biggest from memory in group 1 was a Skoda 1.4 but was a full size Family car.
On the other hand a Ford Ka is a Small hatch again 1.4 but Group 2 so you need to try and sort out exactly what you require as the more sorted the requirements the shorter the Short list will be.
If you are a bit unsure you could also go for an automatic Gearbox.
1 A lot easier to drive to start, you could change back to manual as you learn to drive the car without having to look for everything.
2 Lower group automatics are not targeted by car thieves, like Porches, and so normally not be thrashed by Boy Racers.
At 52 I went to automatics due to Arthritis and wonder why I hadn't before.
