1. Raise your deductible.

A higher deductible on collision and comprehensive coverage can lower your auto insurance rates. For example, increasing your deductible from $200 to $500 could cut your collision cost by as much as 30%. Since the average annual premium is $687, this can save you $206 per year.

2. Drop collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars.

If your car is declared a total loss, you will receive the cash value. If your car is 5 years old or older, it may make sense to cancel the collision and/or comprehensive portion of your policy and bank the savings.

3. Avoid duplicate medical coverage.

If you have adequate health insurance, you may be paying for duplicate medical coverage in your auto insurance rates. In some states, eliminating personal injury protection (PIP) can lower your premium by up to 40%.

4. Drive a “Low-Profile” car.

The auto insurance rates are much higher for cars that are expensive to repair, or are favorite targets for thieves.   Before buying a car, determine the auto insurance rates.

5. Drive less.

Some auto insurance companies offer cheap auto insurance quotes to motorists who drive less than a predetermined number of miles a year. Consider using public transportation, a carpool or vanpool to commute to work.

6. Ask for a multi-policy discount.

Some insurance companies give a discount if you have your homeowner policy with them also.

7. Ask for a discount based on your credit score.

Some auto insurance companies use the credit score to establish premiums. If you have a high credit score, ask for a discount.

8.  Compare auto insurance rates.

When shopping for the cheapest auto insurance, you will find that prices for the same coverage can vary by hundreds of dollars. So, it pays to compare auto insurance rates.

Life insurance is a mix of terminology and incomprehensible phrases. What do the phrases, term life, whole life and universal life mean?

Life Insurance Sales

Getting the best life insurance is important! But it’s hard to understand what the different words and phrases mean, but now there are answers on the internet to help you. Information and life insurance quoting sites such as ours can let you learn on your own. On a site like this, you can check the market for the lowest life insurance quotes and learn the difference between all these types.

What Type of Life Insurance Should I Buy?

If you have dependants you should have term life insurance and perhaps disability insurance. Life insurance is used to replace the income that you no longer can provide if you’re not around. Disability replaces that income if you are here but can’t work.

How Much Life Insurance Should I Buy?

You should buy sufficient life insurance so that, if invested at the current low term interest rate say 5%, the investment will return sufficient capital to replace your income. And remember that is to replace your income after taxes.

What About The Different Types Of Life Insurance?

There is term life insurance that works like your house or car insurance; you pay it every year. Again, there is no cash back on any of these policies. Whole life insurance is up to 5 times as expensive, as to some extent you are prepaying premiums. And universal life insurance means that you need make an investment on top of your term life premium.

When all is said and done, unless you have a large estate which requires a different approach, you are best to switch to the most cost effective type of policy which is term life insurance.

With the recession causing even more unemployment, health insurance is becoming an increasing burden on family resources. Here are some resources and programs you should consider when trying to shave off some of the rising costs of health care:

1. Workers’ Compensation

Commonly known as Workers’ Comp, Workers’ Compensation is a program that helps pay for injuries that have been incurred on the job. So if you throw out your back lifting a bag at work, you may be entitled to free or reduced medical care with your state insurance health plan. Any permanent injury is often compensated with a small stipend until you reach retirement age. So if your treatment is the result of an on-the-job injury, your employer must offer to pay with your company’s Workers’ Compensation program.

2. Individual/Family Health Coverage

Most people assume that if their employer doesn’t supply insurance, it’s impossible to get insured. Individual/Family Health insurance plans, however, are another option. Just as you buy home or life or car insurance, you can go to a company and buy health insurance. While these are generally more expensive than group insurance plans, you can negotiate your deductible and pick and choose your policies to fit your budget. Choosing an emergency deductible policy is the best way to maintain a low cost health insurance plan. That way, you can keep a Health Savings Account for smaller health issues, and you ca keep down your long-term costs.

3. Short Term Health Insurance Coverage

If you are in between jobs, Short term health insurance coverage is a great way to maintain coverage while waiting for a new job to start. To do this, purchase insurance from a private company (similar to an individual health plan), but only stipulate a small amount of time. This will keep your premium low.

4. Group Insurance from Private Organizations

America isn’t really a country that revels in the culture of private clubs and organizations. It’s a shame, because a lot of groups offer discounted health care for their members. Just like with an employer membership, an organization uses its large numbers to negotiate better deals for its members. If you are a member of the Northwestern University Alumni Association, you can get a variety of cheap insurance choices. It’s also possible to research what organizations have the best insurance programs and then join.

No matter what you decide, make sure the plan has the level of coverage you want, and don’t skimp on programs you’ll need for prices you want.

Insurance rates continue to climb as disasters such as floods, wildfires, and hurricanes are factored in. Rate increases that are double, even triple the cost of living are common, putting added pressure on cash strapped families everywhere. Fortunately, you can get a handle on your insurance costs by following these important money saving tips.

Combine Various Policies. If you own a home and you own a vehicle then buy your insurance from the same insurance business. Some insurance companies recompense customers who choose to package their various insurance policies, by offering discounts as high as ten or fifteen percent.

Refrain From Poor Habits. Smoking, drinking, taking illicit drugs can work against you. If you live “clean” make certain your insurance broker knows this. Your rate will be reduced correspondingly with your good health report.

Reduce Your Deductibles. Maybe a $200 home insurance deduction is too low. If you can manage a deductible of $500 or $1000 you can significantly reduce your premium. You’ll pay more if a situation arises, but how often do you file a claim anyway?

Cover Your Small Losses. If you are considering what will likely be a small claim, give thought to not submitting this information to the insurance company. Claims made by you, whether small or large, can push up your rates or even cause your policy to be cancelled.

Special Discounts. Depending on your age, driving record, even your credit score, there are special discounts you can take that will reduce your premiums. If you aren’t receiving discounts…ask!

Scrutinize Your Policy. Every policy is correct, isn’t it? Don’t bet on it! A wrong zip code could have your insurer thinking that you live on the wrong side of the tracks…literally! Rates can fluctuate from neighborhood to neighborhood; make certain that your rates are in line with what your neighbors pay.

Pay It All Now. Save on your premiums by paying the entire invoice up front instead of monthly or quarterly. Insurers will add on an extra fee to your premium if you choose to spread out your payments over time.

You could also save yourself money by staying with one insurer as most will reward regular customers with loyalty discounts. Furthermore, it could benefit you to have an alarm installed in your car or in your home, especially if you reside in a high crime area or visit neighborhoods where your car could be vandalized.

Insurance is generally something that you purchase in order to protect you and your family from the potential financial loss caused by a catastrophic event or serious illness.

But there are types of insurance that don’t really provide that peace of mind for you, that are not required, that cost more than you could ever benefit from, and that are best avoided.

Here are 3 types of insurance that you can “just say NO” to.

Life Insurance Sold By Credit Card Companies

Credit card companies will offer you insurance that pays off your credit card balances when you die. If you already have a life insurance policy, either obtained on your own or through your employer, that will do the same thing. Why pay the credit card companies a much higher premium for the same thing?

Rental Car Insurance

When you rent a car, they always ask you if you want auto insurance which will cover you if you are in an accident in the rental car. If you have your own auto insurance, you will most likely not need this. Check with your agent to be sure, but most policies cover you regardless of what car you are driving. Even if your regular policy only offers this coverage by adding a “rider” to your policy, the cost of the rider will most likely be much cheaper than paying the higher per-day charge that the rental agency will charge you.

There are a couple of exceptions to note. If the car rental is for business use, check to see if your employer’s business policy covers you. And if you will be driving outside of the US, your agent can tell you if you will require special coverage.

Unreasonably Low Deductibles

While this is not technically a “type” of insurance, it is an insurance expense that you can do without. A lot of people carry lower deductibles because of the peace of mind it gives them. But how many times do you really need this lower deductible? And nowadays, while you may be required to carry insurance, it is often detrimental if you actually use it!

So if filing a claim will jeopardize your insurance coverage, you may want to only file a claim that you really can’t handle. It makes much more sense to raise your deductible and “self-insure” for the smaller claims, using the savings from your lower premiums.

If you decide to increase your deductibles, be sure to put your saved premium dollars into a savings account so that you can pay for those losses that fall below your increased deductible amount.

Specialty-type coverages, like the ones mentioned here, can usually be covered with another good broad-based policy that you already have. And why are these speciality insurance polices more expensive? It costs more for the insurance companies to administer these policies … so guess who ends up paying for the extra costs?!

Life insurance guarantees payment of a given amount to the insured person’s beneficiaries when the policy owner dies. While many people, especially younger people, don’t necessarily want to take the time to think about something as abstract as dying, this form of insurance is particularly important for parents or other persons with dependents.

The basic structure of most life insurance policies is relatively straight-forward: the policy owner pays a premium every month; upon the owner’s death, the insurer issues payment for the policy amount to the spouse, children, or other beneficiary(-ies) named in the policy. In practice, as with most forms of insurance, specific policies can be much more complicated than this fairly simple model.

For example, the life insurance policy might have riders, or additional clauses, that pay off in the event of a terminal or critical illness or a permanent disability due to physical or mental causes. Also, there are different varieties of policies, including term life insurance, whole life coverage, universal coverage, and limited-pay policies. Understanding the difference between the different types of coverage and picking the appropriate one for your situation can be difficult, and professional advice may be necessary to ensure the correct policy is in place.

Term Life Insurance covers the insured for a certain number of years, after which the coverage typically expires. Because the policy does not build any cash value, and because it is typically based on a low likelihood of death for the covered person, term insurance premiums are usually relatively low. However, the length of the term, the amount of coverage (and whether it stays constant or decreases over time), and the premium amount (again, fixed or adjustable over time), will all affect the premium amount. The lower premium is a primary advantage of term life insurance; a drawback is that, at the end of the term, the still-living insured receives no benefit from the coverage.

Whole Life Insurance is permanent life insurance, which means the policy holder can withdraw money paid in or borrow against the cash value. Whole life has the advantage of a fixed annual premium and guaranteed death benefits. Premiums are much higher than term life policies at first, but over the life of the policy the two policy types roughly even out in terms of total cost. While whole life insurance does build value over time, it may not be as strong as other savings options in terms of the rate of returns. Also, dividends are not guaranteed with whole life.

Universal life insurance is similar to whole life, but it offers more flexibility in premiums and may offer stronger returns over time. It also has a cash account and accrues interest.

The variety of policies available is intimidating enough to many people. With dozens of optional riders available, and variations even within individual rider classes, competent professional help is definitely recommended when selecting life insurance. It should be noted that the life insurance policies offered by many employers, while an attractive benefit, are typically not adequate to meet the needs of the insured’s family in the event of an untimely death. The total amount of life insurance carried should be enough to pay off any mortgages, car payments, credit card debt, and any other major outstanding debt, leaving the survivors in a solid financial situation.

Some strategies on finding affordable health insurance.

I’ve been a health insurance agent since 1985. I help Connecticut residents find health insurance and have for the last several years have also managed a website that helps people in other states find medical and hospital policies online.

Over the years I have changed my mind about hospitalization only insurance. These health insurance policies have significant limitations that are not found in the typical health insurance plan. I tend now to help my clients who express an interest in hospital only policies find catastrophic health insurance providers. High deductible or catastrophic medical insurance policies are also low in cost, but have fewer drawbacks.

Why I don’t like hospitalization only insurance:

Hospital stays are getting shorter and shorter. However, people are not necessarily healing any more quickly. The medical care that years ago, you might have received in the hospital during the last day or two of your stay is today care that you are likely to receive outside of the hospital. This care is not likely to be covered. A hospitalization only health insurance plan may cover the hospital stay, usually not the medical care that takes place outside of the hospital.

X-rays, lab work, MRIs, etc. often take place outside of a hospital. These can be expensive and may not be covered by a hospitalization only insurance policy.

A long-term illness may require years of doctors visits, none of which are likely to be covered by a hospitalization only insurance policy.

People buy hospitalization only insurance policies to save money. Saving money is of course a good thing. However if it was the only thing we’d all buy the least expensive car and wear the least expensive clothes.

If you need to keep your costs for health insurance lower, I recommend searching for medical and hospital policies online or elsewhere and looking for a catastrophic or high deductible policy that covers you both in the doctor’s office and in the hospital. In my opinion, a catastrophic health insurance policy that has a $2,000 deductible, but covers you in the doctor’s office and the hospital is a better deal than a hospitalization only policy that has a $1,000 deductible even if they cost the same.

Hospitalization only insurance is like a bullet-proof vest that is only bullet-proof in the front. Catastrophic health insurance may be a better option. If you need to save money, go for a higher deductible medical insurance policy that is “bullet-proof” on both sides.

Good Luck,
